Y ahora, un mensaje de la comunidad comiquera juarenze
An open letter to the comic book community in El Paso, Texas and Juarez.
The comic book community is dying. Although it seems that there is great interest in superheroes and comic book properties, they are all in different venues of entertainment. There are people who fail to recognize that Spiderman was a comic book character before he was on the big screen, or that Superman was created in comics and was larger than life before he was shrunken down and shrink wrapped in a box to be displayed as the newest hottest toy. These are all travesties that affect the comic book community because we are all suffering from disposable entertainment. Music, movies, toys, video games, these are all things that attract our attention, and the ideas behind these sorts of entertainment usually comes from a piece of pop culture known as the comic, or mecenbased off the comic book genre.
But younger people, kids, are no longer buying comics like back in the day. Back when I was a kid, comics were for everyone. Spiderman never failed, and Batman always saved the day. But now, heroes are no longer the same. Heroes fight heroes and no one is safe because comics are no longer for children.
Which brings me to why I’m writing this letter and proposing a “solution” of sorts to the dilemma at hand.
If there is no one to take up the mantle after we are gone, no one to fill in the holes after we, the comic-book community, step down or move on to other things, who will continue to write and draw what we love the most? Who will continue the tradition?
It is up to us, the ones who are now on the frontlines to leave a “legacy” for our children, and our children’s children. Instead of trying to outdo each other, of having egos the size of houses that walk into the room before we do, we need to unify and stand in solidarity as a community that supports each other, rather that outdo one another.
Let’s generate interest in what we love, so that children can believe in heroes again and that perhaps, they will dare to dream big, like we did when we were kids.
In essence I am proposing that for the upcoming FCBD or Free Comic Book Day, we all join our talents and produce an El Paso/Juarez comic book, showcasing everyone who is interested and to be given away on May 5th 2007, in conjunction with Free Comic Book Day!
The rules are few and simple:
1. There will be ZERO NAMES, ZERO LOGOS, and ZERO EGOS appearing in the comic. Everything showcased will be credited to the appropriate creator and they will have their email or website included with the work. This way we avoid self-promotion, cross-promotion, no-promotion, and dual-motion, and any other motion, except emotion.
2. All work submitted will be geared for ALL AGES! Think of it as something that you would show your mom, or that you would like to give to kids. Anything can be done, if it is thought out and done right so don’t think for a minute that anyone will be censored. Taste, tact, and professionalism are the key words here.
3. The comic book will be produced and given away for free! That means that on FCBD we will give all the books away and any that left over will either be distributed amongst those involved or be given away to charitable organizations, libraries, or special interest groups.
4. A month will be given to produce the material needed to put together the book. This means that all interested have a month to write and draw the work, if you’d like to take care of lettering and anything else then do it, if you need help in these fields, we will find a way to help you out. All work will be submitted by March 16th. You can send it by mail or email it or we will have a specific place where it can be dropped off. All work will be returned to the respective creators and all rights belong to the creators. Remember, this is an effort to unify the community, so we can all help each other out
5. If response to this idea is overwhelming, then we can take steps to insure that appropriate time is given to all involved to produce the best story and art that will truly showcase the area’s talent. We are not lacking in talent, we only lack the motivation to do this right.
That’s it for now, but if anyone has questions or comments about this idea, please email me at orpheusoul@gmail.com
Thank you for your time, and I hope we can all collaborate on this and make the scene what it’s supposed to be!
Respectfully,
Ray Ramos
